How much temporary fence do I need, and how many panels is that?
Getting the footage right before you call saves time and money and makes every quote comparable. It takes about five minutes.
Measuring the perimeter
Walk it with a measuring wheel if you have one, or count paces and multiply, or measure the lot on a satellite map. None of these has to be perfect: we confirm it on site, and a sensible quote carries a little margin.
Add about ten percent for corners, gate returns, and places the line jogs around a utility box, a tree, or a neighbour’s wall. Straight-line measurements always come out short.
Count existing walls as fence where they qualify. Most Chandler residential lots already have block on two or three sides. If those walls meet the requirements for what you are doing, you only need the open sides plus the driveway.
That last point is the biggest single saving available. We often see a lot that seems to call for 400 feet of fence get by with 120.
Converting to panels
Standard freestanding chain link panels are 12 feet long.
Panels = perimeter in feet ÷ 12, rounded up, plus one or two
The extra one or two cover gate positions and the corners where a panel has to be cut short.
| Perimeter | Approximate panels |
|---|---|
| 100 ft | 9 |
| 150 ft | 13 |
| 200 ft | 18 |
| 300 ft | 26 |
| 400 ft | 35 |
| 600 ft | 51 |
For in-ground chain link, which is priced per linear foot rather than per panel, you just need the footage: $1.50–$3.00 per linear foot per month on the pricing page.
Where the gates go
Gates are $50–$150 each, and their placement is worth thinking about for two minutes rather than deciding on install day.
- Make the gate wide enough for the biggest truck, not for foot traffic. A concrete truck, a trailer with a skid steer, a delivery flatbed. Too narrow is discovered at the worst possible moment.
- Put vehicle gates where a truck can actually swing in, allowing for the street and any parked cars.
- Give crews their own walk-through gate at the spot they come and go. It saves opening the big one twenty times a day, and on a pool barrier it means the compliant self-closing gate is the one people actually use.
- On a pool barrier, gate hardware is a code item, not a preference: self-closing, self-latching, opening away from the pool, latch placed high. See the pool barrier page.
Which fence type for your job
| Situation | Usually the right choice |
|---|---|
| Job under 3 months, no digging allowed | Freestanding panels on bases |
| Job 3 months or longer | In-ground chain link, stronger and often cheaper per month |
| Pool under construction | Pool-code temporary barrier, a specified product |
| Event, one to five days | Panels and barricades, set to the layout |
| Dust control on a graded lot | Screened line, with the wind caveat below |
| Anything screened through July and August | In-ground if possible, extra ballast if not |
The screen question changes the number
Adding privacy screen or windscreen costs $0.50–$1.00 per linear foot per month, and it also changes what the line needs underneath it. A screened fence is a solid sail, Valley microbursts are violent, and a screened line needs more ballast, closer base spacing, and often bracing. That is real material and labour, and it belongs in the quote rather than in a surprise. The blown over page explains the mechanism.
Put the number in and get a price
The fence cost calculator takes your footage, fence type, duration, screen, and gates and gives you the range from the published price list. Planning an event? The barricade calculator works from unit count and days instead.
What to send with a quote request
Footage, duration, what you are enclosing, the gate requirement, and how a truck reaches the site. A photo or a satellite screenshot with the fence line drawn on it is better than any description, and it makes the quote you get much closer to the price you pay. We cover Chandler, Sun Lakes, Ahwatukee, Ocotillo, Gilbert, Tempe, and Maricopa.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many feet of fence do I need?
Measure the perimeter of what you are enclosing and add roughly ten percent for corners, gate returns, and the places the line has to jog around something. If you are fencing part of a lot rather than the whole thing, measure the open sides only and count any existing wall as fence if it meets your requirements.
How many panels is that?
Standard freestanding chain link panels are 12 feet, so divide your footage by 12 and round up, then add one or two for gates and awkward corners. A 200-foot run is about 17 panels; a 400-foot lot perimeter is about 34.
Do I need to fence the whole property?
Usually not. Existing block walls count as part of an enclosure if they meet the height and gap requirements for whatever you are doing, which for a pool build is specific. Most residential jobs only need the open sides and the driveway closed.
How wide should the gate be?
Size it for the largest thing that has to get through, not for people. A concrete truck, a skid steer on a trailer, or a delivery flatbed needs real width, and a gate that turns out to be too narrow is discovered on the worst possible morning.
